My friends family own a beautiful place in the south of France, with a pool and outside kitchen - and we've been invited to stay! I cant believe it - a summer holiday for the first time in six years - the kids will be so pleased - they can finally join in with all their friends talk about where they are going on holiday...
And its a fabulous house, in the wine region of France, which is heaven for OH - , oh Im so excited
And weve found free flights from Edinburgh - with Ryan Air - just pay taxes etc ( that mounts up - but the flight is free, i cant believe it!) thought we were going to have to travel to Birmingham for the 99p flights, but this is so much better as it gets into a nearer airport in France too...
Oh, I cant wait.

exactly - the looking foward is part of the holiday
now I need to get the passports organised, buy some nice new summer clothes...
Ive been invited over to the place loads of times, but it always seemed such a difficult place to get to - i envisaged 3 days driving to get there, and witht eh kids that didnt appeal ( and then of course to get back too)
But she came round the other night ( shes just back form an ashram in India) and said oh please come...so we looked up flights - which id always discounted as being prohibitive - and suddenly found Rynaair doing these really cheap flights. from Edinburgh to the local airport over there - just couldnt get any better!
the problem is we wont have transport when we're there, but in a way, who cares - we'll get the local buses if we want to go to the beach, or visit other places. but its going to be so hot I think we'll just laze about at the house, in the village or along the canal...just stay local and really get to know the place.
the only slight worry I have is that normally they wont take children under twelve...and weve got four.
But technically we're guests of my friend, rather then her parents....

My plan is to encourage my eldest to do the talking - it'll be good practice for him, and impress his French teacher when he gets back !
and suddenly, Im reminded of this book
which i always loved. not a childrens book at all.
Rumer Godden is an extraordinary story teller.
I suppose she is most well known for Black Narcissus, and another book about nuns - in this House of Brede, about personalities and power struggle in a closed community.
But all her books are wonderful, she is an amazingly beautiful writer. Her book the Battle of the Villa Fiorita, was considered quite scandalous and difficult when it was first published, about a wife and mother who has an affair

Right now Ive got a bottle of Minervois ( which is the area), and a plate of green and black olives and roasted garlic from the local market...Im so lucky I cant believe it. really excited and looking forward to it
I going to take some books with me - and I might even get a chance to read them - the boys will be happy to be out and about/playing with my friend - who really is very special to them - she was at two of their births, and Ive got her lined up to be their mum, should anything ever happen to me. (OH understands full well that she will be his new wife..he's ok with it. )
Oh Im such a lucky girlie...i cant believe Im going on holiday, and to such a great place!
