That's a coincidence; I was researching the construction of the M1 the other week. There's some info on the
CBRD site.

Bridge 52 under construction, near Newport Pagnall
A thread about the M1 wouldn't be complete without a pic of the suicide bridge near to Junction 37, near Barnsley...

Here's a place I pass on a very frequent basis: the M1/M621 interchange, Leeds:

Back when it was first constructed, the M1 must have been a magical place. Now it's a sodding nightmare of immense proportions. After 1600 on any weekday, the M1 southbound/M62 exit is absolute chaos and huuuuge queues abound.

Through derbyshire/Nottinghamshire there are about 14 miles of roadworks with a 50MPH limit (don't even get me started!

) while they widen the carriageway to four lanes. Here's a couple of my own pics of that, taken from the internal Bridge at Trowell Services not long ago...

And, finally, a pic to mark a bygone era: the Tinsley Cooling towers which were visible to motorway travellers passing Sheffield for years, until their recent demolition.

The M1's my favourite motorway. It's home to me, really; all roads lead to it. My next fave's the M74.
Happy birthday, M1!
