This used to be my favourite Hymn.
It's musically a masterpeice.

Did you know Queen Elizabeth 1st referred to England as Jerusalem?

"Jerusalem"
William Blake

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark Satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold:
Bring me my arrows of desire:
Bring me my spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire.

I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

Masonic Swedenborgianism

The prevalence of an unmistakable political dimension in Swedenborgianism warns us not to limit the scope of our understanding of Blake’s motives for seeking out the New Jerusalem Church only to questions of theology. There are undeniable links between the reading of Swedenborg and radical activity, centered on a branch of radical Freemasons who operated internationally, but gathered in London. [16] However, it has been obfuscated largely due to the historian on the early developments in the New Jerusalem Church, Robert Hindmarsh.

MASONIC ART

There are two mayor sections of the vast field of creative expressions we refer to as Masonic Art. One that is more obvious, particularly to Freemasons, is the art made for Freemasonry; to decorate exterior and interior of the Masonic Halls, furnishing, Masonic Regalia, jewelry, books, and clothes, or to illustrate symbolism and teachings of Freemasonry, either visually, with sounds or in words. The purpose of this art is, not only to bring delight to the eyes, ears, or mind of the Freemasons, but also to help them better understand symbolism and lessons of the Craft.

The second section (please see the above linked website), less obvious, and generally less known, is the art made by artists in various fields, that was inspired by the symbolism and philosophy of Masonry. The most prominent works in this section were paintings of William Blake and William Hogarth, music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Jan Sibelius, writings of Goethe and Rudyard Kipling, poems of Lessing, Robert Burns, and Alexander Pope, architecture and design of Sir John Soane, sculptures of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and many others.

Today, there is a big number of Freemasons who are artists and express their Masonic understandings through various mediums of art. Often, this is visible only to those familiar with the Masonic symbolism.

On this page, we tried to present samples of Masonic art made for Freemasonry, as well as inspired by it. We also have a virtual gallery page directly linked to this page which hosts various artists presenting their Masonic art to on–line public.

"The Illustrious Lineage of the Royal House of Britain" Avctore Gv. M. H. Milner, A.M., S.G.R.Soc., I.V.Adsoc. E. TYPIS EDD PRIOR R. FOLKARD ET FIL. ED. OCTAVA RENOVATA. LONDINI: MCMXXIII, publ. by The Covenant Publishing Company., Ltd., 6 Buckingham Gate, London, S.W. 1, first publ. 1902 [?], 12th edition 1951.

[This facinating chart belongs to Margery Glasier (deceased 2002) of Edmonton who acquired it from her father (she does not know its original origin); it purports to show that Queen Elizabeth II is descended from Judah and the House of David. It is a remarkable genealogy showing on a single sheet much of the present British royal family's very complex ancestry through various other royal families of Europe. Where it can be cross checked, this chart generally agrees with other sources. Unfortunately, in places the connecting lines are ambiguous and sometimes the print is too small to be read (it is not well printed)]

Achem indeed. ;)

Glad you picked up on it GG.

T'was my favourite hymn from when I was a lad.
Spoiled it for me.

Now, I resign myself to 'Abide with me', which is also beautiful.
