Margate's most famous daughter is contemplating abandoning the UK for France in protest at the 50% tax rate and the government's attitude to the arts.

Tracey Emin, who already has a home across the Channel, said in an interview that she was "very seriously considering leaving Britain", adding: "I'm simply not willing to pay tax at 50% … I reckon it would mean me paying about 65p in every pound with tax, National Insurance and so on."

However, the artist said that the Treasury's 50% tax rate – which will be imposed from next April on those earning more than £150,000 a year – was not the only factor in her decision.

"So much here is simply not working now," she said. "The taxes are too high, there aren't enough incentives to work hard, and our politicians have put me off. We're paying through the nose for everything."

A friend of Emin confirmed that while the artist was not a particularly political person, she was becoming increasingly exasperated with the government and was giving serious thought to a permanent move to the Var department of Provence, where she has been spending a lot of time at her home and where she is having a studio built. Emin had already discussed the possibility of a permanent move with her staff, although she was worried about having to spend so long away from Britain.

Hmmm, wonder how she knows about 'working hard'?

Can't say I'll miss her too much. :):

I thought the term 'artist' gave a person exemption from particular taxation.

Emin either has a useless accountant, or she is really not an artist. I would hazard the latter.

As for the move to France, she might actually have to create something artistic to survive, why did she not bother over here ?

She's the Jade Goody of the Art World. She's hideous. It's like some Art Elite have found her and passed her round their friends as being some kind of genius and it's all Kings New Clothes and no one has the courage to speak up and say she's crap.

Mind you it's all subjective, so one person's crap is another person's gold.

You'll have to attach a pretentious story behind the paper plane and then it'll transform from being a paper plane into something worth £35,000 + VAT :)

Interestingly I saw an interview with Tracey Emin a few weeks ago, and while most of what she talked about was getting pissed at society party's the subejct of what is art did come up. And she said exactly that ....... i.e anything can become art in the right context.

And that's how it works. You can take a pile of bricks. ( I actually have a pile of bricks in my kitchen/diner which is a building site at the moment ) And it's just a pile of bricks. However if you put a sign in front of the bricks saying something nonsensically pretentious like ....

"Existentialist form circumscribing the indulgence of chaos into order during the cantankerous period"

it suddenly becomes art and Kings New Clothes types start getting moist over it.
