Axed Strictly judge Arlene Phillips is to step back into her dance judge role for a new BBC series, So You Think You Can Dance, it was announced today.

The 66-year-old choreographer's departure from Strictly Come Dancing sparked an ageism debate when she was replaced by 30-year-old Alesha Dixon.

But she has now been revealed as a botoxed key figure in a new UK version of a talent show which has already become a huge hit in the U.S..

She will join head judge Nigel Lythgoe, who is best known as Nasty Nigel for his appearances on ITV's Popstars series, which made stars of Hear'Say.

For the new show amateur and professional dancers from around the country will compete for the title of Britain's Favourite Dancer next January.

Phillips said: 'So You Think You Can Dance is a dancer's dream. This show can be the making of the artists competing in it.

'I've always supported dance talent and look forward to seeing the most promising developing before our eyes each week.'

The show - which has run for five series in the U.S., hosted by British star Cat Deeley - is produced by Lythgoe and American Idol creator Simon Fuller.

It sees aspiring professional dancers go through an audition stage before being challenged to different styles of dance, such as hip hop, jazz, Broadway, lyrical and contemporary, on a live show each week. A new routine is taught by a different choreographer and mentor.

Live performances are put before a public vote and a contestant is voted off each week, until one winner remains, who receives a cash prize plus a 'once-in-a-lifetime experience'.

Lythgoe, 60, was formerly an executive at London Weekend Television before finding his own TV fame, but left the ITV company to work with Fuller, one of the wealthiest figures in the UK media.

He said: 'I began my career as a dancer on the BBC in the Sixties. Now, I'm back as a judge of dancers - I believe I've made a full circle back to television's home of dance here at the BBC.

'I couldn't have imagined that dance would become a global phenomenon that would ultimately be responsible for this, my very special homecoming. It's good to be home.'

Jay Hunt, controller of BBC1, said: 'I am thrilled that the channel that brings audiences Strictly Come Dancing will now also host the ultimate nationwide competition to find the UK's favourite dancer.

'It's an exciting addition to the Saturday night line-up.'

Nationwide auditions will begin in October.
