Plaid MEP wants EU ban on food from cloned animals |
Plaid MEP Jill Evans is calling for a ban on food produced from cloned animals being sold to the public. The need for a ban is all the more urgent since some experts are predicting these kinds of products could reach European markets by 2010.
Now MEPs want the European Commission to ban the cloning of animals for food supply, as well the import of cloned animals or their offspring to the EU in order to make sure they are kept out of the food chain. The European Parliament has voted in favour of a motion supporting a ban, which is backed by Ms Evans.
The Plaid MEP said:
"There is overwhelming political and public support for a ban on food from cloned animals. The European Commission must listen and it must act soon if we are keep meat from cloned animal .... |

Olympic stars honoured at Senedd event |
Chris Franks AM met Welsh Olympic stars at a special event at the Senedd.
He congratulated Nicole Cooke from Wick on her gold medal in the Olympics and met fellow former St Cyres, Penarth pupil David Davies from Barry who won a silver medal at the Beijing games.
The AM hopes the Olympic success will spur others to take up sport and for some to represent Wales on an international stage.

Plaid selects candidate for the Cynon Valley |

Plaid welcome Eisteddfod to Cardiff |
The Plaid Cymru Culture Minister Alun Ffred Jones and Cardiff Council’s Deputy Leader Neil McEvoy today welcomed the National Eisteddfod to Cardiff.
This is the first time for the Eisteddfod to visit the capital city in thirty years. The Eisteddfod is expecting over 150,000 people to attend the event between Saturday the 2nd of August and Saturday the 9th of August.

Plaid demands adequate Welsh language |
As the Eisteddfod opened in Cardiff today, Plaid Cymru launched a petition calling on a government department to safeguard its Welsh language provision. Plaid welcomes Glasgow East “earthquake” |
Plaid leader Ieuan Wyn Jones has today sent his party's congratulations to the SNP following their historical by-election victory in Glasgow East.
A swing of 22.5% from Labour enabled the SNP to overturn a majority of 13,507. With a majority of 365 votes, new SNP MP John Mason will now become the 10th member of the SNP-Plaid group in Westminster.

Welsh laws should be made in Wales |

MEP intervenes in deportation case |
Plaid MEP Jill Evans has intervened in the case of a Nigerian born woman from Cardiff who faces deportation. Ms Evans is writing to Home Secretary Jackie Smith asking for the deportation to be stopped on compassionate grounds given that Kemi Ayinde is a victim of people trafficking and is heavily pregnant.
