Funding for mountain rescue teams

Scotland's mountain rescue teams are to receive substantial funding from the Scottish Government.

Minister for Community Safety Fergus Ewing today announced that £300,000 for 2008-09 is to be provided to the Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland to support the dedicated teams of volunteers who participate in the various mountain rescue teams across Scotland.

Speaking ahead of addressing the UK Mountain and Cave Rescue conference tomorrow, Fergus Ewing said:

"Every year many thousands of Scots and visitors from throughout the world enjoy one of our greatest natural assets - our mountains.

"However, they can also be dangerous places and even expert climbers can find themselves in difficulties and needing help.

"As a former member of the mountain rescue service I am well aware of the vital role Scotland's mountain rescue teams play in aiding those who end up in difficulty.

"The Scottish Government is committed to supporting these dedicated, highly professional teams of volunteers and that is why we are giving them £300,000 to ensure that there is a continuing, effective resource for all those who use our hills and mountains."

The Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland is the representative and coordinating body for mountain rescue services in Scotland.

Dementia research
A new Dementia Research Network for Scotland is to be financed with more than £1 million of investment from the Scottish Government.

Bringing together Scotland's leading academics and clinicians, the Network aims to translate scientific discoveries into safe and effective treatments, focusing on patient centred clinical research.

Public Health Minister Shona Robison said:

"The Scottish Government has made tackling dementia a national priority in order to ensure more is done to improve support for those with dementia and importantly, for effective support to be offered at the earliest possible opportunity.

Action to prevent red squirrel extinction
A new phase in a project to prevent the extinction of one of Scotland's most valuable native species got underway today.

The Red Squirrels in South Scotland (RSSS) Project will seek to halt the spread of the lethal squirrelpox virus by creating a 'buffer zone' across the south of the country.

Its work will include an extensive programme of humane control of the invasive grey squirrel species.

Seagull squad to destroy nests
The formation of a new team to help deal with the nuisance of seagulls has been announced today.

The Seagull Task Force will shortly begin looking at ways in which gulls can be prevented from nesting and how nests can be effectively destroyed.
